Just the other day my friend and I are perusing our fav social networks when we see a few profiles that catch our attention. I decide to check one out since I like connecting with new and interesting people. So, I click and the words "top model" practically jump off the screen. But when I look further at the girl's bio, she's just an everyday girl. Immediately my friend I scream out "Oh no she didn't!" We felt like she was faking the funk by claiming to be a model when she clearly was not. Then again, maybe she's just speaking it into existence. This brings me to my question:

Can you call yourself a model if you don't do it professionally?

The example above is something many of us see on social networks more often than we'd like. You've seen the wannabe rapper, actor, or model promoting themselves as the real thing. You decide to give them a shot and check out their stuff only to be disappointed by the lack of professionalism. I've got my own pet peeves about this practice. As someone who's worked hard to establish myself, it does bother me when a person tries to say he or she is a model just because he or she has a Model Mayhem account, a Tumblr, etc. On the other hand, I can't knock the hustle.

Ever heard the phrase "Fake it till you make it"? Well, it's something you hear a lot amongst the aspiring and working crowd in Hollywood. Basically, you've got to act like you're the next big thing in order to be the next big thing. Proclaim it and it shall be.

But you can't just tell the world you're a model and have nothing to back it up with. Have you done any photo shoots or runway shows? Do you have a portfolio or someone within the industry that can vouch for you? Saying that you're a model but have no experience is like applying for a job you're not qualified for. Arm yourself with the proper tools to be what you want to be. Sign up for a modeling network. Go to a workshop. Do test shoots. Set up a simple website. Remember, in order to be a professional you need to present yourself as a professional. If you dress for success, you may actually be successful.

On a personal note, It took a while for me to actually stand up proudly with my chest out and say "Yes, I am a model". Even though I got paid for it and continued to work, somehow I still didn't feel legit until I had an agent. Now I know that my own insecurities were keeping me from owning what I am passionate about doing. Don't let that happen to you. The sooner you talk the talk, the sooner you'll be able to call yourself the real thing.

The Look: Super hot lady. Beautiful, dressed to kill. Great sense of style and confidence.
Anyone who knows me knows that I only get cute for auditions or a special celebration. And this day was no different. I wanted to look sexy without trying too hard. You know... cool and classy. Anything overly "hot" just makes me blush.

I decided it was time to pull out my Boxing Kitten skirt to accentuate my feminine physique. The Batik fabric added a bit of funk to my chocolate and caramel. I love how even though I've had this skirt for years, prints like this are always in style.

Serendipity Shopping: PUR

Out running errands today and I decide to stop by Space 15 Twenty. I peruse Urban Outfitters, check out Free People, and finally make my way to PUR. Not only is the store having a Buy One, Get One Free sale, but there's great vintage pieces at just $5! I went rummaging through the pile. Ooo, there's a cute top. And look at those funky pants.

After trying everything on and checking my wallet (you know I'm a frugal shopper) I settled on a cute tunic tank and a maxi skirt. And I only spent 10 bucks! Good stuff.

The sale ends tomorrow, so go get some fantastic stuff at PUR now!

Earlier this week a friend of mine emailed me with a predicament. She said that a designer she'd worked with before wants to book her on another shoot. This sounded like a great opportunity, but there's an issue. My girl had no idea what she should be getting paid to do this. She asked me "what's a fair and reasonable rate" to charge for a photo shoot?

The art of negotiation is something many models aren't familiar with. And why should we be? Normally an agent or a manager takes care of this dirty work for you. But when you're freelance, sometimes you've got to barter your own terms. How much should you get paid? Is it a look book or a campaign? What's the usage for the photos? In situations like this, you've got to be your own advocate.

When you're working out your own terms, make sure that you maintain your professionalism. Your talent and time are worth something, so don't short change yourself. But you also don't want to overcharge a client. You're not Linda Evangelista who refuses to get out of bed for less than 10 grand. Be fair and reasonable when deciding on how much you should get compensated for your work whether it's for pay or trade. As long as you keep it strictly business and don't take things too personally, your peers will admire how you handle yourself.

Remember, the client wants you for a reason. You're a hot commodity. Just keep your negotiations classy and let your star shine.

Break a Leg: The Dos and Don'ts of Runway Castings

The models are coming! The Big Apple is swarming with long-legged amazons from around the world in anticipation of fashion week. They're putting their best strut forward for a chance to walk the infamous New York runways. For all you model freshmen out there, this is a big freaking deal! It's an opportunity get your foot in the door and get your career going. Now, we all know what to do and not to do at these runway castings, right? Don't worry. Your Fairy Model Mother's got you covered.

Let's take it from the top. Your agent sends you an email with 7 castings and tells you to expect more as the day goes on. Before you start getting all nervous, know that you've got it all under control. You've been practicing your walk for weeks, and you think you've got it. Well, that's just a third of what casting directors will be looking at. They'll also be checking out your book, and dissecting you. That means you should focus on making sure you don't look like a wreck.

Just say no to frumpy, sloppy clothes and that "I went out partying and I still have on last night's makeup" look. Opt for a slinky top and skinny jeans with simple heels. Go for neutral colors. Oh, and keep your makeup light and natural. Designers want to see you as a blank canvas they can paint.
Now you're ready to head out the door. Don't forget your book!

Once you're at the casting, play it cool. While you're waiting, practice your walk once or twice, but don't over do it. Save your thunder for when you're in front of the big wigs.

Alright, once you're in the actual casting room...
Walk to the table with confidence. Introduce yourself with a soft smile, but nothing cheesy. If the room seems cold, make your presence known without saying too much. If the casting directors are friendly, make sure you're just as nice. If they ask you a question, be direct but show your personality. Whatever you do, keep your small talk short and sweet. The last thing anyone wants to deal with is a model who runs on and on about absolutely nothing.

When it's time to walk, show 'em what you got. Do a "middle of the road with energy" sort of walk. You don't know if the designer wants fun and flirty or dark and mysterious for the runway presentation. You want to make sure that you stand out from the other models without sticking out like a sore thumb.

Once you're done, grab your book and say "thank you".

Here are my quick dos and don'ts for runway castings:

*Don't look like a slob.
*Do wear something neat and form-fitting.
*Don't wear heavy makeup and overdone hair.
*Do look fresh and clean with a simple hair style.
*Don't be obnoxiously loud while you're waiting for your turn.
*Do engage the casting director with charm when you're called on.
*Don't strut like a streetwalker.
*Do walk with confidence and poise.
*Don't walk away without saying thank you.
*Do be polite no matter how badly or how well the casting went.

Remember, good manners and confidence can get you into the show even when your book and your walk may still need work.

P.S. Bring a comfortable pair of shoes to wear between castings. I've made the mistake of trying to walk the town in heels and ended up with horrible blisters. Save your feet.

We all have our favorite piece of clothing. It may be a jacket, a sky-high pair of heels, or jeans that fit you just right. I'm particularly fond of comfy, sleek sweaters and stripes. So when I shot for Target recently and the stylists put me in this Mossimo sweater, I was ecstatic!

When you've got a piece of clothing you love to wear, you can't sport it the same way all the time. Boring. If you mix and match a few things then throw in a statement accessory, you've got a whole different look.

Look 1- Color block - Add some pops of color to a black and white top. Try purple denim, red chunky heels, and a neon clutch.
Look 2- Très Chic - This one has a Parisian flair. Pair stripes with more stripes and polka dots. Top it off with a petite hat and booties.
Look 3- Town & Country - Polish and refine a casual sweater with this tailored Merona jacket, slim jeans, and ankle boots. Add feathered earrings and a necklace for extra shine.

Remember, you can always accessorize and play around with your makeup to create more style and distinction with the same outfit.

My Style: The Boyfriend Jacket

Although I'm all about getting dolled up, I'm also a plain Jane kind of gal. I love dressing down in jeans and a T, but I'm a big fan of wearing my boyfriend's clothes. His stuff is oversized and comfy and perfect. Sometimes he thinks I look cute, but then other times he's like "Hey! I was gonna wear that." Oops. Oh well.

I'm sure you ladies know where I'm coming from. Sometimes you just want to wear something cozy that doesn't suffocate your body. When wearing your BF's clothes, always try to pair one piece with something a little feminine. I threw this look together to grab coffee in the morning, so I was thinking for incognito than en vogue.

Wool Beanie. Check. Sunglasses. Check. Skinny jeans. Check. Butt-kickin' boots. Alright. Top it off with a Five Four peacoat and I'm good to go. With cool duds like this, why wouldn't I wear my boyfriend's clothes.

Underneath It All

This month let's focus on getting to know the real you. The you who wants to take life by the reigns. The you who is control of your career. The you with the fiercest shoe collection ever. But what about the you hiding underneath all the makeup, hair extensions, and fancy clothes? Somehow in the midst of looking fabulous, have you lost touch with the real you?

Tyra Banks recently shared a photo with her fans sans makeup and even without having her hair styled. No concealer. No foundation. Not even a brush to tame those fly-aways. The photo hit Tumblr and the peanut gallery started talking. Cue the mean comments. I don't know why people are acting surprised. Tyra has taken her makeup off for the cameras before. I'd like to believe she took this photo to prove a point.

No one's perfect. We've got uneven complexions, bags under our eyes, and pimples on our faces. Some of us have thinning hair, gray hair we'd like to cover up, or a hair texture we just don't like. I get it. As a model, some people may think that I look flawless all the time. There are days when I wake up, look in the mirror, and say "Oh hell no!" I mean, I will literally look like I've been hit by a train. No joke. But I have to accept the fact that the face staring back is actually me. The trick is that we all have to take care of ourselves inside to improve our outward appearance.

Are you up for a challenge? Try going day without makeup and hair extensions. Oh the horror! Go through your daily beautification routine without "beating your face". Don't try to sneak in any tinted moisturizer, mascara, or lipgloss. Take a picture of yourself and don't delete. Throughout the day, write down the reasons you wear makeup and wear weaves (if you do). I really believe that the more you write the more you'll discover why you've been covering up the real you. Print the photo and save your list in a special journal. Try this exercise at least once a month, and a short amount of time you'll rediscover your own beauty.

Out with the old and in with the new. 2012 is upon us, and I'm so excited for the opportunities this year will bring. In 2011, I endured a few bumps and definitely sustained some bruises. But I'm coming out swinging.

I've got big plans for Model Liberation including adding new features, bringing you more of my personal style, and definitely giving you my saucy yet optimistic advice. If you have any ideas on what else you'd like to see, please drop me a line.

Whatever was holding us back from achieving our true potential is now officially squashed. Time to put your best foot forward and strut like you mean it. Walk hard!

Room For One

"Sorry, we've already got someone who looks like you."
The hunt for the perfect modeling agency can be tough, especially if you're a model with a very specific look. Trust me. I know this all too well.
Ages ago when I was looking for representation, a friend of mine recommended I try her agency. Keep in mind, I have a bit of an agency phobia. It's almost like trying out for cheerleading or pledging a sorority. You've got what it takes, but are they going to choose you?
I sent in good photos. I'd been working for a few years, so it's not like my portfolio was mediocre. The agents said they were interested, so we set up a meeting. When it was time for the interview, I was ready. They'd already seen my work, now they wanted to see if I looked as good in person. The agent and I said our hellos and sat down to look at my book. There was silence as she flipped the pages. I got nervous. After a few minutes she looked back at me with a sense of approval, but the decision to sign me wasn't completely up to her. She had to talk with the head of the agency. So I waited...
The verdict was in. While they were willing to sign me to one of their divisions, they were not interested in signing me across the board. What?! Why? Because the agency already represented another model with freckles.
I was annoyed. Perturbed. I've met this other model they were talking about. Yes, we both have freckles, but we are completely different women. She is 5'7'' and I'm 5'9''. She's got long straight hair while I keep mine short and natural. She books more ethnically ambiguous, girl-next-door jobs and I book the African American edgy jobs.
This story is common with ethnic and minority models. While many agencies will have dozens of blonds and olive-skinned brunettes who look alike, there just isn't room for too many redheads, Latinas/Latinos, Asians, dark-skinned Africans, or even spotted models on the roster. It's as if agencies are just trying to meet a quota and aren't interested in real diversity. What the agents and model managers fail to realize is that representing multiple models of different ethnicities and backgrounds is actually what can set them apart from other agencies.
No two models are alike. We may have similar features, but we are not the same. It's a bit disappointing that sometimes other people can't see our uniqueness. That just means that it's up to us to differentiate ourselves whether it's through our work or our style.
We may fall from the same sky, but each snowflake is one of a kind. Pay attention to detail.

The Model Bag

When you're a working model, sometimes you've got to get glam on the go. Last minute castings. Commercial auditions. Go-sees. Whatever it is, you've got to be camera-ready and ready to roll. So it helps to have the perfect bag filled with goodies that can take you from drab to fab.
Model friends always laugh at how prepared I am. Some of them go as far as calling me momma. Well, that's Fairy Model Mother to you. You never know when you'll need some last minute bronzer to make your face look sun-kissed for that Hawaii tourism commercial. Or what about some eye cream, Visine, and concealer to cover up the fact that your boyfriend just dumped you over the phone right before the biggest casting of your career. Right?!

On the go beauty for the working model.

First, I start with a cute hobo or satchel that can carry all my stuff without weighing me down. Then I pack it full of lip balm, cocoa butter, mascara, and a small makeup compact. *Make sure to stick with a neutral palette.* When I need a little extra help, I pack my Minimergency kit that includes nail polish remover, dental floss, and even supplies for unexpected lady problems. Top all of this off with facial towelettes and a skin refresher, and I'm good to go!

Even if you're not a model, these things come in handy. You can never be too prepared.

That's Not Her Butt!

Attack of the Virtual Dolls: H&M

Girls love playing dress up. Girls love playing with dolls. Über fashionable retailer lets you do not online, but there's a problem.
The clothing store did everything it was supposed to do. It hired models. Took photos of them in different outfits. But see, H&M did something very wrong. Instead of changing out the models completely for various looks, the company just switched out there heads. And not just for lingerie and swimwear, but for the entire online experience across the board.

"It’s not a real body; it is completely virtual and made by the computer,” says H&M press officer Hacan Andersson.
Obviously models are interchangeable. We are all the same height, same weight, and have the exact same body type. I've perused on other sites that allow shoppers to try clothes on a variety of models with different shapes, so that the shopper can see if the item of clothing will actually work for them. H&M took a far different approach. Let's have a little fun playing with the virtual dolls....

While I love H&M for their cool style and affordable clothes, the virtual dolls are not the business. Although the company claims it didn't intend to mislead customers, it obviously did.

After playing with the "dolls" and trying on clothes, I'm still wondering... who's body is that anyway? Could the real H&M mannequin please stand up!

Karlie Takes It Off... And I'm Not Feeling It

Just months after her implied topless spread for Allure, model Karlie Kloss is at it again. Oh boy. This time the 19-year-old has stripped down for Italian Vogue. Sorry fellas, I'm just not that into it. I've discussed this whole nudity thing before, so I won't go there again. If that's a model's choice, then so be it. I'm going to rant about something else.
The editorial is titled "Body by Kloss" and some are dubbing Karlie the new body à la Elle MacPherson. Ok, but there's a big difference. Elle had and still has a body that both men and women drool over. She made everyone envious of those long legs and lean curves. At the same height Elle weighs in at 36-24-36, and Karlie 32-23-34.5. Big difference!
In the past, Karlie's been accused and being anorexic and I can see why. Images of her in clothes look just fine, but when the couture comes off it's a different story. While Karlie is a beautiful girl, I just don't think her physique is anything to go gaga over. She's got got great muscles and long limbs, but... CAUTION: no curves ahead!

The models of late seem to be getting slimmer and slimmer. From the Victoria's Secret runway to nude spreads in magazines, these girls just don't add up to the bodies of the supermodels I grew up idolizing. I really think images of super skinny bikini and lingerie models send out the wrong message to women and girls.

Turkey. Pumpkin pie. Cornbread stuffing. Sweet Potato Casserole. Mmm mmm. Whether I'm overindulging on comfort food, watching football with the guys, or tuning in to the Macy's parade, Thanksgiving is one of my favorite days of the year.

At the beginning of the week, I started to get that holiday itch. You know what I'm talking about... that "why should I do any work when I'm really just waiting on Thursday" feeling. Fall Into Beauty

I am a makeup junky. Every time I do a fashion show, I bombard the makeup artists with tons of questions like "Hey, what's that color?" or "How did you do that smoky eye?"

I'm sure my fellow beauty mavens understand. We are always trying to re-create our fav runway makeup looks, sometimes without much success. So, I thought pick a makeup artist's brain. I reached out to NYX artist Cheryl Nacario who helped with the looks for the Future Heretics Fall/Winter '11 show. Actually, she beat my face for the catwalk. Fabulous!

Yesterday the entertainment world lost a good one: Heavy D. I loved his rhymes and really appreciated his acting.

Heavy also did something for hip hop that had never been done before. While every rapper was putting really hood, big bootie chicks in their videos, he and director Brett Ratner did something else. They used models. These weren't just regular women. They were recognizable faces like Beverly Peele, Cynthia Bailey, Lana Ogilvie, and Noxzema girl Rebecca Gayheart.

Besides, George Michael's Freedom, this was one of the videos that made me want to be a model. I was a teen when this came out, and I thought "If this is what models do, then I want to do it." These ladies weren't being objectified or scandalous, instead they were just having fun. They came in all shades and hair textures, and all of them were gorgeous.

"So fly when you caught my eye, you made me stutter."

It was 4 am when the adventure began. I got out of bed with crust still in my eyes. Jumped in the shower. Hopped on the train. Caught a bus, and then boarded a plane to San Francisco.

I was there to shoot an editorial with a great photographer. Other than that, I had no idea what was going on or who I'd be working with. I arrived to the studio glossy-eyed and bewildered. Can you blame me? I'd been traveling for nearly 5 hours for goodness sake. I said my hellos and immediately grabbed coffee and a bagel. With every sip of caffeine I started becoming more aware of my surroundings.

Shortly after I arrived, the cast of characters was revealed. There was Ukushu from Russia, Jordan the hairstylist-turned model, Sierra the teenager, and Ivon my fraternal twin from another mother. The first words Ukushu's says to me are "Oh my gosh, it's you! I've seen your face everywhere." And just like that, I'm blushing. It didn't take long for all of us to click. We were exchanging Facebook info and snapping candid pics in a second. Now coordinating our group shot in for the photographer was another story.

We tried our serious model poses. When you're shooting an editorial for a non-fashion magazine, things get a little tricky. We're models, so we've each got our signature faces. Mine is a bit of a blank stare, squinty deer in headlights thing. After some hits and comical misses, we finally got it together. The laughing, smiling look was more our thing. We nailed it!

I can't wait to see the magazine. I promise to share as soon as I get the final images.

New artwork from Rocket Garage

Just the other day, I saw a casting for a print ad that was specifically looking for a model who also had a another profession. Clients often want someone who is well-rounded and has a life outside of the industry. They want personality. Someone who has life experiences is far more interesting than a cute girl without any aspirations.

Every successful person is a hyphenate whether it's actor-director-philanthopist or singer-songwriter-fashion designer. It's an important part of making yourself marketable. You don't want to sound like an overachiever, but you don't want to be boring.

My hyphenate fluctuates somewhere between model-blogger-image creator and writer-blogger-brand consultant. Either way, I still do the exact same thing as always. I'm always creating words, images, and sounds. It's innate.

Taking care of business

I'm trying to do a better job of letting people know what I'm capable of. That's why I finally ordered some business cards. I don't want to be like those characters from American Psycho that pull out their fancy business cards to compare the card stock and the typeface. But I understand that such tools are necessary to get the word out there.

I want people to know that I am more than just a freckled face. I am a woman with knowledge, dreams, and spunk. I like that the agencies that represent me actually get me. I can be whoever you want me to be, but in the end, I'm really just... quirky, complex, beautiful... Me.

Stereotyping: African American Women in Ads

How it is. From Kiss My Black Ads.

Role: African American Woman 18-25. Quirky, fun, attractive, interesting, natural, fresh face, but unique, hip, cool style.
This is taken from a collection of different print and commercial castings I've gone on in the past few years. The role and look is always the same, but only the name of the product changes. Why is that?

Somewhere inside an office on Madison Avenue in the magical land of advertising, a character was born. I like to call her the"aspirational African American woman" also known as the "token". She is brown skinned to light skinned with shoulder length curly or wavy hair. She is funny and approachable. She is urban, yet also suburban. She is your every black girl.

I know you've seen her smile. She's been on your tv screen and all over magazines selling everything from healthy cereals to feminine products to alcohol. She's the sister of the "aspirational Black male" and cousin to Token Morning-News Anchor/Meteorologist. Although each aspirational AA woman is "unique", they really are all the same. She and others like her are interchangeable.

Advertisers created this woman as an attempt to satisfy diversity, while also not alienating the non-minority consumer. The problem is that she has become a standard not only in mainstream advertising, but in Black ads too. I've gone to a casting for a black haircare product and the role was specifically worded as "aspirational female".

How it should be

The African American woman comes in all shades and sizes, so I don't understand why ads limit us to this one look. It's not encouraging and very misleading. (Side note: A large percentage of the African American women in advertising have had their hair manipulated to look naturally curly. Why fake the funk?)

I want to see ads with a variety of Black women with different hues, hairstyles, and backgrounds. I want to see women that have looks that are inspiring and still achievable. I want ads that are actually meant for me and not some advertisers idea of who I am.

Time to sound off. Do you think advertisers really have the minority consumer in mind when they create campaigns?

I like to get dirty. I've been covered in dirt, mud, and now paint. Actually it's just highly pigmented powder used commonly used in Holi, the Indian Festival of Colors. Add water and you get a really cool effect.

It was invigorating. The colored dust unleashed something inside of me. A warrior, maybe. I felt an energy that I had not felt in a long time, and I liked it.

Sweet Treats

Every few months, I get that itch to go shopping and stock up on the season's must-haves. I have a weakness for luxury and comfort, but I can't always afford those things. Like many of you, I'm a chick on a budget. So, when I want something, I'll find a way to get it without breaking my piggy bank.

It all started with online window shopping. I went to The Gap company website to look for some good deals, and what did I find? A site wide sale! 30% off! The shopping fever took hold of me. I quickly loaded up my shopping cart with sweaters, shoes, and jeans.

I'd already picked out what I wanted from Old Navy when a light bulb went off. What if I just went to the actual store to see if I can get a better deal? It was a risk, but it was a risk I was willing to take.

The next day I skipped on over to not just an Old Navy, but an outlet. To my pleasant surprise, there was the entire store was 40% off! I tried on a lot of really cute things, but finally settled on two striped shirts, a pair of grey jeans, and black ankle boots. I like to keep it simple.

When I got home, I had another surprise. Shari from Bon Bon Vie sent me a little care package with a few t-shirts. I didn't even tell her what I had my eye on, but she knew what I'd like. I love them! Thanks, girl.

Aaaah yes. The Deep-V. It's an item of clothing that haunts my daydreams. I love how men think this t-shirt is perfectly fine to wear, but it's really not.

I know guys that rock this look, and I'm not hating on them. They've got great bodies. But when I see them exposing themselves like this, I treat these dudes like a piece of meat. I'm drooling, cat-calling and trying to cop a feel.

Guys, while I love your pecks and your man cleavage, I don't need to see it quite in this fashion. And if I can also check out your abs in the process, that's a "No". I'd rather see an attractive man in a nice button-down than in this.

Saturday Night Live did a great skit over the weekend about this fashion faux pas featuring Ben Stiller and Andy Samberg. Gentleman, pay close attention to the hilarity of the V-neck.

Let's not take this V too far. Keep it lowercase. Keep it classy.

Color Crush: Orange

I think I'm in love with... a color. It's name is Orange. I used to shy away from it because it seemed too bold and brash. Now Orange is my infatuation.

A few weeks ago, I went window shopping with some friends at Third Street Promenade. We walked into J.Crew, and I was drawn to the blazers and jackets hiding in the back of the store. That's when I saw it hanging in the corner and calling my name. At first I resisted and instead tried on a the striped School Boy Blazer. Y'all know how much I love stripes. But this orange Hacking Jacket kept taunting me. Finally, I gave in and put it on.

The rush that came over me was ~~orgasmic~~. I started looking for accessories for my new jacket, and paired it with a gorgeous teal statement necklace. Sweet perfection!

Even though I walked out empty handed, the jacket and necklace are on my wish list. And orange, I've got my eye on you. Wink-wink.

Dear Readers,

I know I've been a stranger lately, and I'm sorry about that. You see, I haven't been feeling too well. I want to be honest with you. Whether it's been self-inflicted or brought on by other people, I've been pretty stressed.

I work in an industry that is unpredictable and a little psychotic. Friends often ask me what upcoming projects am I working on, and I have nothing to say to them. I have no idea when I'll get an audition or actually work. It all just happens on a whim.

In the past month, I have been on "avail" for three different jobs. All of them have been great paying gigs with reputable clients. Being on "avail" is something that I'm all too familiar with. The photographer or client really likes you, but they haven't made their decision yet. You're waiting on the edge of your seat for that phone call saying "You booked it!" But sometimes that call never comes.

That's what I've been experiencing. Having to deal with back-to-back heartache like that has really been weighing me down. I admit, yes, I got my hopes up even when I told myself to play it cool.

I couldn't focus on my writing after all that. I tried to post little things here and there, but I didn't have the heart to do much more. I didn't want you to experience my pessimistic, cynical voice. I want you to enjoy Model Liberation and look forward to coming back.

I did an interview a while ago that has recently been posted on That Good Good Blog. It's funny how reading your own words can be great therapy.

"I used to think that a good life was about perfection, but I know better now. A good life is a happy life that still has its moments of anguish and strife to help you appreciate the brighter moments. I think I'm living that. "

Right on time. I needed to be reminded of why I'm here and why I do what I do. Even though I often feel alone and think that no one else is going through what I'm going through, I know that's not true. I can't let fear of success, failure, or anything else control my life. Instead of covering myself in a blanket of insecurities, I've got to shed all that and... let go.

Brooke Shields was just 15 years old when she famously said "You want to know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing."

Calvin Klein was banking on Brooke's Lolita-like sex appeal, and he hit the jackpot. That jeans campaign was controversial, but profitable. Although a number of the television commercials were pulled, Calvin Klein's revenues reportedly grew by 300 percent in just 90 days. The gamble also paid off for the young model and actress. That same year, 1980, Brooke Shields went on to become the youngest person ever to be on the cover of Vogue.

Turning a teenage girl into a sex symbol seemed out of the park then, but is common practice now. We see young models in suggestive poses on t-shirts and in glossies all the time. Recent examples are Karlie Kloss "nearly nude" in Allure magazine or 10-year-old French model Thylane Lena-Rose Blondeau's recent spread in French Vogue. Just because it happens often doesn't make it cool.
Think about it. Most of the pouty-mouthed babes gracing magazines and runways begin their careers between the ages of 14 and 16. Can you imagine getting paid to be provocative when you don't even really know what sexy is? At that age, you're not even old enough to sign a model release. Your parents have to do it for you.
What I'm trying to say is this: Sex Sells. It doesn't matter if the person being objectified is underage. Which brings me to this question: how young is too young to be sexy?

Dear Fairy-Model Mother: Do Models Pay For Photo Shoots?

Well hello, Ladies and Gentlemen. I'm baaaaaaack!

Lately, there's been a lot of talk on Twitter about what makes a "real model". I'm not going to throw any punches, but I am here to offer some insight. If you want to be something, you've got to talk the talk and walk the walk. Dress and act the part, if you know what I mean. Without further ado, here's the question:

This one is a little tricky. When you're just starting out as a model, you may have to do a number of test shoots to build your book. A lot of times your agency, if you have one, will set it up. Some of these tests may be paid meaning that you, as the model, you are required to compensate the photographer and team for their work. You're seeking them out for their time and talent, not the opposite. Basically, you've got to pay to play. But as your career develops, the number of paid tests you do will diminish.

Of course, there's a way around this. Speaking from personal experience, I have never paid a photographer for pictures for my book. I do know other models that have had to dish out money they don't have to get photos, but I think it's unnecessary.

A few tips:

If you've got the right look, the photographer will want to work with you free of charge. That means you've got something they need to make themselves more marketable. Score!
Know what you need. Don't do a photo shoot with crazy hair and tons of makeup if you need simple beauty shots.
Connect with other artists who want to collaborate on a project that will benefit everyone involved. You'll get cool pics and you'll create something truly memorable.

Think Smart! Don't go spending money on something that really won't help you out in the long run.

You've got to be resourceful if you're going to get ahead.

Dear Fairy-Model Mother, How Do You Stay Slim and Trim?

Hello lovelies. Your Fairy-Model Mother took a little time away, but now she's back with some motivation. Wow, I really did just refer to myself in the third person. Scary. On to the good stuff.

This week's question comes from Linda K who says "I would like to hear about how you stay slim and what are some things that will help me lose weight. Do you have any good tips?"

This is such a relevant discussion for today. I strongly believe that too often women of colour are trapped in unhealthy lifestyles, and we've got to do something about it. We come up with so many reasons for why we're not in shape or why we don't go to the gym. A few weeks ago, the surgeon general, a woman herself, criticized us for putting our hair before our health.

"Oftentimes you get women saying, ‘I can’t exercise today because I don’t want to sweat my hair back or get my hair wet,' Dr. Regina M. Benjamin explains. "When you’re starting to exercise, you look for reasons not to, and sometimes the hair is one of those reasons.”

I've used this excuse and every excuse under the sun not to exercise. Just because I've got a slim frame doesn't mean that I'm exempt from working out. As I get older, I've realized that I've got to push myself harder to be healthier. Even models have stretch marks and cellulite.

Naturalistas are guilty of the hair excuse too. Don't be afraid that a little sweat will ruin your braid-out or your silky tresses. When you're healthy, your hair is too.

The hardest thing about staying fit is getting started. So to help on your fitness journey, I made a video just for you.

Here's what I do to stay fit:

A little cardio- at least 20 minutes and 3-4 times a week. For the woman with a busy schedule to juggle, this is a good start.

Go green- include more fruits and veggies in your meals. Dating a vegan has taught me that there's more to food than just meat and potatoes.

Hydrate with water- Many of the "juices" on the market barely have any real juice at all. So stick with good ol' H2O. If you can drink alkaline water, that's even better. It will help balance the pH levels in your body.

Stand up straight- Remember your mother yelling this at you as a kid? Well, there's a reason. When your back is straight and your body is aligned, your abs are tight. This develops your core which is an important part of yoga and ballet. It also builds poise and confidence.

Have fun- try taking a salsa class or just go dancing with your girls. You'll burn off that chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream when you're doing something you enjoy.

Keep your head up- It may take you a while to get where you want to be, but keep working at it. Positive energy creates healthy energy.

When I first heard The Strokes, I must admit, it was Julian Casablancas that I loved instantly. His style, persona, and overall hipness is quite intoxicating. Let's face it. When you're the son of the founder of Elite Models and the former Miss Denmark, you're bound to either be a douche bag or a tre' cool.

This season, Julian is putting his good looks and voice to use in a new ad campaign for Azzaro. He's the face of the company's new fragrance, Decibel.

Strike A Pose

Fashion, although inspiring and seductive, can also be downright ridiculous. The avant-garde clothing. The obsession with youth. Now one artist is drawing attention to fashion's love for impractical mannequin-like stances.

“Poses” is a direct criticism of the absurd and artificial world of glamour and of fashion that magazines present. Specifically, the highly-distorted image of women that they transmit through models that do not represent real women and that avoid all those who are not within their restricted parameters.-Yolanda Dominguez

When you flip through your favorite glossy, I'm sure you ooo and awe over the latest Louis Vuitton ad or fashion spread. But we rarely stop and think, why are the models in these contortionist positions draped in couture? I don't have know the answer to that, and I'm guilty of doing it myself.

I get annoyed when I see girls posing for photos with their hands on their hips, so this video really gets under my skin. Seeing normal women striking these poses seems funny at first. But the more you watch the video, the more you see the message the artist Yolanda Dominguez is trying to convey. These are the images we are putting out there for ladies around the world to emulate. It's unrealistic and unattainable.

But isn't the allure of fashion the fact that it is fantasy? What do you think?

I am still basking in the glow of natural hair love. Last weekend Kurly Bella and I made our way to the Kim Coles Grow Out Challenge Celebration. This was the first time I'd actually attended a natural hair meetup let alone in LA. The turnout was fantastic!

Not only did I get to meet Kim Coles and Curly Nikki, I was also introduced to so many lovely ladies with to-die-for hair. On a sidenote: Kim and I actually met before, but every time is just as exciting as the first time. These women were all glowing with love and excitement as we celebrated our kinky and curls.

What really touched me the most was getting to meet people that I've influenced and didn't even know it. Nicole the author of "I Love My Cotton Candy Hair" told me that she has shown my pictures to her daughters to encourage them to love their skin color and their beautiful hair. Another woman told me how my story has helped her on her natural hair journey. I was speechless.

Going to that natural hair meetup allowed me to connect with some of the most beautiful souls who have been influential in my personal exploration. And somehow I've done the same for others. It makes my heart skip a beat.

Dear Fairy-Model Mother, I've Got A New Hair Cut

Last week, I answered a question for Christian who just wanted simple advice as an aspiring model. I recorded a little something in response, and totally thought that was the end of it. Boy, was I wrong. Once I got to my computer and checked out Christian's blog, I noticed something she conveniently forgot to mention. Christian recently chopped off her curls! She's been toying between long straight her, loose coils, and a tight crop. Now she's got a fade! Girl, we've got to talk.

As a model, cutting your hair is a big deal. It may not seem like it's that important, but it can potentially be career changing. In fact, most modeling contracts do not allow talent to "alter his/her image" without consulting the agency first.

A haircut can completely change your look and your marketability as a model. Now I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but you should proceed with caution. Let's take a look at the pros and cons.

Cons:

A new cut calls for new pictures. When you're just starting out, having to redo your entire portfolio can cost you more time and more money. You've got to pay another photographer for a test shoot. You've got to pay to print those new photos out for your book. Sometimes, it's just not worth it.
Remember when your favorite celebrity or model decided to chop their hair off, and it was a disaster? The gossip blogs and fashion magazines were all buzzing about the new cut, but not in a good way. Then low and behold, weeks later that same person magically has their old hairstyle back. Why? Because their new image was costing them work. That celeb may have lost out on campaigns and endrosements because they got a buzz cut. Let's learn from someone's else hair faux pas.
That new cut may not frame your face well. Instead of opening up your eyes and accentuating your cheekbones, it just makes you look awkward.

Pros:

Your old hair could have been weighing you down. If you were going to open calls, and the agencies said they loved you but something wasn't quite right. Maybe it was your hair. A big chop can open doors that were closed to you before, and instantly give you that edge agents love.
A fierce cut can take you from plain jane to scoring a big campaign. You've got a fresh look that totally in for the season. Who knows, maybe you'll start a trend.

I'm saying all of this to you because I've been there. I was super nervous about transitioning to natural, and just as nervous when I cut my hair for the summer. Sometimes you never know what the reaction will be until you take that leap.

The moral of the story is, think long and hard before you do that big chop. Talk to your friends, your hairstylist, and even potential clients. If they think you'd look good with short hair, then do it. And if you're like Christian and you've already done, rock it!

You've heard of flash mobs, right? A group of people practice a routine, plan their attack in a public place, and at the stroke of the clock they burst into dance. Well, the same can be done with fashion. And thanks to Kelsi Smith of Dedicated Follower and Two Point Oh LA, this concept is now a reality in sunny California.

A few days before the event, Smith asked me to jump on board. I didn't know very many details other than we would be wearing bikinis. Yikes! Eventually she sent out an email to all the models with the schematics of her plan, and we promised to keep everything hush-hush.

The morning of the Los Feliz Fashion Fest, where we would kick off Smith's fash mob, all was eerily calm. The other models and I were pretty tight-lipped as we sat through the rehearsal and then hair and makeup. None of us knew quite what to expect, and neither did Smith. But as we put on our bikinis and our coverups and prepared to face the crowd, we all got a little nervous.

Dear Fairy Model-Mother, What's Been the Modeling World's Response to Your Hair

Since I've had a long week without any posts, I decided to double up today's advice.
A few readers asked " How old you were when you made the decision to go natural, were you already modeling at that time, and what's been the modeling world's response to your hair?" What a mouthful! So here's goes nothing.
During the late summer of 2008, I decided to cut my hair. I still had a relaxer, but I was getting a touch-up every seven to nine weeks instead of every five. I figured a new short cut would work wonders for my modeling career. Well, that $200 hairdo grew out in a month, and I was back in the same position I'd started. I kept telling myself I was going to get off of the creamy crack, but my new growth kept convincing me otherwise.
Over the next few months of traveling and working, my hair endured a lot of abuse. Clients were never quite sure what to do with my hair even when it was straight. My tresses were often being styled by someone who was not familiar with black hair. Even though it's thick and can withstand the elements, I knew that my hair needed some R&R.
In December 2008, I got my last relaxer. And months before my 29th birthday, I transitioned into my natural state. I was very concerned if I'd still get work while I was transitioning. But there was no need to fret. I booked a couple of runway gigs, and the designers loved my funky do. ( It kind of looked like Lisa Bonet's short cut from the Cosby Show.) When clients wanted a more "polished look" I would just curl it.
When it was finally time to cut off the rest of my relaxed ends, I was so ready. I saw my curl pattern and fell in love. After that, there was no turning back. The fashion world was just going to have to accept me for me. And you know what? They did! I've only done one job since my big chop/transition where the client wanted to straighten my hair.
The benefits of short natural hair as a model:
Short hair frames my face well. It draws attention to my unique features, instead of away from them.
My kinks and coils are always runway ready! Having short hair means there's no need to fuss over how to style it for a shoot.
The clients don't have to think outside of the box, because what you see is what you get.
And best of all, my short, natural hair won't get damaged from all the pulling and tugging of styling.
Seeing natural-haired models encourages me not to alter who I am to fit other standards of beauty. And I hope my story can help you do the same.

Dear Fairy-Model Mother, Should I Do Stock Photos?

A few years ago, I was trying to build my modeling portfolio and earn a little extra cash. I found an ad on Craigslist that seemed to fit the bill. "Photographer looking for models for a stock photo shoot" the ad read. I submitted my pictures and stats, and waited for a response. In less than a day the photographer called to book me, and I was thrilled.

When I arrived to the studio, I met the photographer and the incredible glam squad. They explained we would be shooting a few different looks for a beauty story. I knew that the goal was to get enough compelling images for the stock photo collection. The photographer thoroughly explained to me the usage and my rate, so I knew what I was getting myself into.

Sitting in the hair and makeup chair in front of that huge mirror with those bright lights, I felt like a star. When it was finally time for me to step in front of the camera, I was ready to shine. Four hours, three wardrobe changes, three hair and makeup looks later, it was a wrap! I knew we'd gotten some great stuff, but it would be months before I would know the fate of the images we created.

Stock photography is a catalog of photos that are licensed for a specific use. Instead of hiring a photographer and models, a company can just search a database to find pictures needed for a project. Just agree to the terms, pay the fees, and boom, you've got photos!

Fast forward to nearly two years after I did that shoot. I get an email from an old classmate telling me that my spread in a well-known Black magazine looks fabulous. Wait, what?! She must have made a mistake, because I did not shoot for the magazine. I hit up a newsstand, and start flipping through pages. Low and behold, I'm right there on pages 37 and 38.

I was speechless. How had this happened? Ah yes, these photos were from that stock photo shoot. I guess I'd expected the photographer to alert me to when and where the images would be used, but it doesn't work like that. Once I signed the model release and the photographer gave the images to the photo agencies, that was it. My direct involvement was done.

Over the next few years, more and more images from that stock photo collection began popping up around the world. My photos were used to sell makeup, teach women about protecting their hair from heat damage, and encourage corporate companies to get a makeover. My face was even used by a racist blogger to demonstrate what happens when races mix. There was nothing I could do to stop it, because I'd signed a release that allowed anyone to purchase my image.

Before you decide to do stock photography, consider the consequences. Yes, it can potentially be great exposure. Early in my career, I needed those tear sheets for my portfolio. The downside is that for the rest of my life those photos can be used online and in print, and I don't get paid every time. Is it really worth it?

My rate as a model for that stock photo shoot was $250. Being able to say "Hey Mom, I'm in Cosmo South Africa!" is priceless!

It could not have been more than a day before I got a message from Shana, the community manager, requesting to feature my blog on their site. I was so psyched! She said that my story is a good one and she wanted to share with their network.

It really makes my heart go pitter-pat when someone says I'm an inspiration. Initially I didn't get into this business to help others, but I've found my calling. Whether it's posing for photos, dishing out advice, or encouraging you to love yourself, I enjoy doing what I do.

Summer Reading: Secrets of the Model Dorm

Young girls all over the world have dreams of being a star. They want to hear Tyra say "You are still in the running to be America's Next Top Model?" What actually happens when a small town teen lands a contract with a big time modeling agency?
My friend Amanda Kerlin knows a little something that. She's written a book called "Secrets of the Model Dorm" that follows the story of Heather who moves to New York to be a supermodel. But she soon learns, life in the Big Apple isn't so easy. Despite her beauty, Heather isn't having much luck landing jobs. Rachel, the head of Heather's new agency, is terrifying and intimidating. And to top it all off, Heather has to live with crazy model roommates in an apartment the size of a one-car garage.
The story is fantastic and I had to know more, so I caught up with the author to chit-chat.
Nikia: What inspired you to write this book?

Amanda: After having lived all over the world modeling (in several model apartments) I saw first hand what it's like to live the life of a model. Not at all how they picture it to the public. The cat fights between models, the drugs, the evils of the fashion business, etc. I felt the need to write a book to show everyone a side never seen before in this way.

Nikia: Was the real Rachel as harsh as the fictional Rachel?

Amanda: Rachel is a mix of a lot of bookers I have had over the years in various places :)

Nikia: Do you think your book paints an accurate picture of the modeling world or is it just a caricature?

Amanda: The book is dead on for me - truth about the fashion world and the people who are immersed in it.

Nikia: You took some time off from modeling for a bit, but now you're back in the fashion game. How is this time around different for you?

Amanda: This time around I am in it for the cash, not to be the next Vogue cover model. Before I lived for fashion and all that came with it, and now I just want to make money for the future and eventually work in an art gallery again or for a museum :)

Nikia: Heather fights to prove that she's more than just a pretty face throughout the novel. Do you feel like you have to do the same?

Amanda: I KNOW there is more to a person than their face. I wanted to get that message out to all the young teens in American reading the book. It also important for them to know how much retouching goes into every photo. I have cellulite but by the time my booty is printed in a mag is looks smooth and perfect. NO ONE is perfect. Nowadays I don't feel I need to fight to prove I'm more than a pretty face; hopefully people will find that out for themselves when they get to know me :)

Nikia: Please tell me there's a movie in the works. Yeah?

Amanda: I've had interest from the like of Nylon's editor Marvin Scott Jarrod as well as a well known Aussie film director. Nothing is confirmed at this point, and let's hope this time next year I can answer differently :) xxxx

Somewhere inside of me there's a voice that's been quiet. I'm getting back to one of my first loves: recording.

As a kid, I used to record myself on my tape player. I'd sing, chit-chat, and impersonate cartoon characters. My mom thought it was cute. It annoyed my sister, so I kept doing it.

When I decided to major in Mass Communications in college, it was no surprise to the people who really knew me. One semester, I had German, radio production, and German Cabaret back to back. In between classes, I'd have to do weird mouth stretching and loosen up my tongue, just so I wouldn't start talking with some crazy Bavarian accent for the radio recordings. Oh, and let's not forget that I'm a Southerner. Good gracious!

After taking a long hiatus from all of that, I've decided to start up again. I will be sharing my quirky rants, interesting streets sounds, and who knows what else with you on Sound Cloud. Here's a little taste of what you'll get:

Getting cute for a ~~night out on the town~~, I mean, an audition.

I don't want to look too done up, but just enough so the casting director gets the point. I'm keeping the makeup simple with a barely-there pink lip, and black eyeliner. Even though I'm technically supposed to have an evening glam look, I don't want to mask my unique features. Never let your makeup and wardrobe distract everyone from your awesome personality.

Save the Trees

TMI for a good cause. I get it, every year we are cutting down too many trees for paper products. We all need to cut back and be responsible. But do we really need to see a model peeing in the forrest to get the point the across? Well, one organization thinks so.

Model Environment is a group of fashion models who are working to tackle social and environmental issues. These catwalk queens are fighting to keep mother earth healthy by promoting the responsible use of paper, cleaning products, and encouraging recycling.

Check out this PSA featuring the gorgeous Helene Traasavik on the importance of conserving toilet paper. And yes, she's on the toilet.

I think Model Environment should contact GoGirl and do some crazy ads together. That would be epic!

Naked models seems so be a theme this week with this PSA and those Zappos ads. Do you think the slight nudity in this campaign is effective?

Logged onto Facebook this morning, and there was this suggestion that I add a friend. Kind of strange since this person had a photo of me as his/her profile pic. I was curious, so I clicked.
Low and behold someone had recently created a fake profile for me with quotes and a number of photos from my blog. This person had even duped some of my friends and other fans.
While this is all flattering, it's also quite disappointing. Whoever you are, please find your own identity. Find your own place in this world. I'm sure you've got something to offer and you don't need my face to help you do it. I wish you well.

When Kitty Attacks!

All I'm trying to do is work, and the kitty known as M. disrupts my concentration. First he climbs up my leg. Then he attacks me for my hazelnut latte. Then he decides to perch on my shoulder like he's an emotionally dependent pet.

Zappos is launching a new campaign that is sure to grab your attention. The company has created interactive ads that allow you to dress their nude models using QR codes. Cool, right?
That all sounds fun and everything, but my concern is for the models. In my years in the business, I've seen the amount of money talent receives for campaigns drop considerably. Once upon a time, a model could get paid a lot just for going topless. I know girls that would charge per boob.
These ladies are just completely exposed and in public places. Yes, their lady parts are strategically covered by the slogan "More than Shoes," but is that enough to keep their dignity? I hope they were properly compensated for showing off their goods.
I'm not being a prude. I'm sure if the right opportunity presented itself, I'd ditch my clothes. Or maybe not. How much would it take for you to pose in the nude?

It's been a lazy summer, and even slower year. I'm starting to feel like I need to recharge. It may be time for an extended vacation.
To be completely honest, I often think about throwing in the towel. How much easier would my life be if I just abandoned this city and this hustle for something more stable? I might be ready for that. But then again, would I feel fulfilled?
I'm toying with the idea. I'm growing weary of the frivolousness and fickleness of the industry I'm in. In a business obsessed with youth, I might be getting a little too old. But I feel like I have an obligation to keep on keeping on. I've been sacrificing so much, but I've got to look out for me. Maybe it's time for a lifestyle compromise. I keep praying for signs, but sometimes God's got jokes.

The boys of summer are here! And I'm not talking baseball. I'm talking surfers.

One guy in particular I'm drooling over is Preston Davis. He's not just a nice piece of eye candy. Swoon. Preston is an actor, a filmmaker, a model, philanthropist, and an avid surfer. You've seen him in campaigns for Target and that quirky Subway Green Lantern commercial.

Preston has taken his passion for water and waves and turned into into something very cool. He calls it Smiles Surf School. If you've ever wanted to surf, I highly suggest learning from this dude. Just after watching this video, I'm sure you'll want to grab a board and head to the beach.

This project has been a long time coming. Team Phorter would like to introduce to you a new voice. He's not just another singer-songwriter, he's also a visionary. This guy has been backing up his own family for years and producing a number of artists both independent and signed. After years of working behind-the-scenes, now he's emerging with his own sound. We proudly give you Shorter.

Many of you may know this new artist personally as Christian Shorter. You grew up with him in upstate New York, went to school with him, or maybe you just met him through friends of friends. Christian is the kind of guy who will give you the shirt off his back, cook for you, and then serenade you on his guitar. Well the artist known as Shorter is that same person.

Hey y'all. I'm sorry I've been M-I-A. I've been in transition for a few weeks now, and my head has been so clouded lately. It's hard to be yourself when you're not comfortable in the place you're in. Not to speak badly of my previous home, but it was very difficult to be creative in that environment.

Thank goodness for good friends! When I was completely up in the air about where to live, a dear friend came to the rescue. She opened up her space to me and I am so thankful.

I'm officially a downtown girl! Just blocks away from the Fashion District, I'll be bringing you more of what you love. You will get more style posts from me and hopefully some street style too. Living downtown is exactly what I need to push me creatively.

Hot off the Press: BlackHair UK!

I just want to share something with you that I'm really excited about. For the June/July issue of BlackHair Magazine UK, I am featured as the Model of the Moment. It's really an honor to be getting love from across the Atlantic. BlackHair Magazine's editor Keysha Davis said:

"Nikia, we obviously love the fact that you are a model who represents diversity but we also are thrilled by the fact that you are an intelligent woman who offes an insight into the world of modelling as well as other issues in wider society."

Wow! I am humbled by those kind words.

In the interview, I talk about how I got started modeling, fav designers and photographers, and of course my hair regime. I also dish and my best and worst experiences in the industry. I won't give away all the details, you'll just have to pick up your own copy.

The magazine also features interviews with Janelle Monae, Trey Songz, and Marsha Ambrosius. I'm in the presence of such star power.

Music Monday: Luna Angel

Good music and good people are still alive and kicking. Case in point: Luna Angel. With a name like that, you know she's destined for greatness.

Luna hails from the Bay area, but she's been cultivating her sound right here in LA. I first met Luna years ago through designer phenom Melody Ehsani. Through her kind demeanor and style, I could tell instantly that Luna's an artist and that she has a beautiful soul.

Check out Luna Angel's new video "The City is Still Mine" directed by Stephanie Owens. Shot on a Saturday in downtown LA, the video is all about a girls' night out. Luna's voice and her flair really capture the Cali vibe. And I love the outfit!

I Heart Quazimotto on Wax

On the night of my birthday, a really wild affair that I'll discuss later, an old classmate of mine posts a message on my Facebook.

"Happy birthday!! The craziest thing just happened! I'm at an art show for Quasimodo and my friend recognized your photo and I was like I know her!!!! Lol! Anywho, have a great birthday!"

I was tickled! Mr. Quazimotto told me that he would exhibiting some of his work for a fundraiser in Atlanta and that a couple of my photographs would be featured. I've got family and friends in ATL so I knew someone I'm cool with would be there.

The model-photographer relationship is precious. It's not just a working relationship, it's love. Whenever I need some encouragement, artists like Quazi and Kwesi Abbensetts are right there to keep me pushing. You'd think that it's just the model who is a muse. Actually, the admiration is reciprocal. The photographer is the muse too.

Happy Birthday! I am so blessed to be able to celebrate another year of life. This already feels like a significant anniversary. 31 years ago and five days after her own birthday, my mother gave birth to me.

I may not be in the same positiion she was, but I'm making my own way. I'm setting my own standards. It may not be the easiest, but it's my choice. I can only be me.

I cut my hair! I was tired of the bulk. I could put it in a little afro puff on the top of my head. Not cute.

To prep my hair, I moisturized with Free Your Mane Reviving spray. I prefer cutting my hair when it's a little damp and not completely wet, so I can see the true length.

About Last Night...

I wake up this morning with vague memories of last night's adventures. No, it's not hangover. Since I rarely go out, it all seemed like a dream. I'm yawning and rubbing my eyes. I look over and there's a tattoo on my arm! What?!

There's a perfect explanation for this. I'd gone out to an Art Gallery opening with Taye of Stuff She Likes. The gallery's featured artist Kristine Maudal had these cute temporary tattoos made just for the event. Talk about smart marketing. So Taye and I got tatted up for the night.

We met some very attractive new friends, Patrick and Jae. After the show, we headed over to Mezza for tapas then to Voyeur for a little dancing. I wasn't prepared for a night out on the town, but that's exactly what I got. In Hollywood, you never know what will happen. Call it Serendipity.
